Connecting to KGCOE Remote Apps
KGCOE hosts a Remote Apps server that allows students, faculty, and staff to use certain apps remotely from on and off-campus. Some apps include:
- Ansys Lumerical Optics Suite
- PROLITH
- Jupyter Notebook/Python 3.x
The connection steps below are applicable to Windows and Mac, though Mac users will need to have the Windows App installed.
How to Connect
Start by opening a web browser and go to remoteapps.ad.rit.edu. Log in with your RIT username preceded by "main\" (example, "main\ritchie"). You will be prompted for Duo authentication when logging in.
Upon logging in successfully, you will see several icons for different remote apps. Click on "KGCOE Remote Apps".

The site will download a .RDP file to your downloads folder. Once downloaded, open the .RDP file.
The file should automatically open in Remote Desktop Connection on Windows or Windows App for Mac and begin connecting you to the Remote Apps servers.
When prompted for your username, enter "main.ad.rit.edu\" and then your username (no @rit.edu). For example, if your username is abc1234, you would enter main.ad.rit.edu\abc1234. Not including the domain prefix may cause connections to fail, especially from personal devices.
If you are connecting from off-campus, you will receive a Duo Push request to connect to RIT's Remote Desktop Gateway (rdgateway.ad.rit.edu). Your login attempt will fail if the Duo Push is not approved. Hardware tokens and SMS/offline codes are not supported when logging into RD Gateway.
Once logged in successfully, you will be connected to an available Remote Apps server.
Security Note
As of 4/7/2026, .RDP files downloaded from remoteapps.ad.rit.edu are one-time use. Upon each time you need to connect, you must go to remoteapps.ad.rit.edu and download a new .RDP file. Please see ITS KB0045875, "MFA for Remote Services" for more information.
